Limit Hold Em Betting

Limit hold em betting is different, in many ways and for many reasons, than no limit hold em betting and pot limit hold em betting. In some ways it can be advantageous, while in others it isn't.

The betting in limit Texas hold em makes it much easier to manipulate the size of the pot, especially if you want to keep it low. You will often be getting the correct odds to draw to straights and flushes after the flop, and can play your good hands very aggressively without worrying about going broke if one of your opponents has a slightly better hand.

These are not only a great help in play, but they also can be good for your psychological state at the table as well. You will make better decisions when you can make them with limited stress at the poker table.

On the other hand, limit hold em betting will not allow you to protect a good hand, because you can only bet a certain amount. Your opponents will be correct in chasing the same flush and straight draws mentioned above. In addition, when you trap an opponent, you can't extract the maximum amount from them in limit play.

It is also much harder to bluff successfully, because your opponent is only required to call a single bet. It is much easier to call a $10 bet on the river than a $100 one.

Learn the pluses and minuses of limit hold em betting and how to use them to your advantage. All it takes is a bit of practice and hard work, and before you know it, you will find yourself on the winning side more often than not.

Limit vs. NL

Does the betting structure in limit hold em favor good players more or less than in no limit? The very best players will win more over the long run in no limit play, but the short-term swings are much smaller in limit hold em.

If you can take a few big losses along with your big wins, then no limit play is probably best. But if you are like most of us and like a little consistency, limit hold em may be for you.

You won't have as many big wins, but if you are a good player you will probably never have a big loss at the limit tables. A short run of bad luck at no limit play can be very expensive.
